Dear NCCU Supporters, Friends, Alumni:

It is with sincere appreciation for my Alma Mater and its uncompromising commitment to service and scholarship that I enter the “Mrs. Alumni” contest. The North Carolina Central University (NCCU) Alumni Association will formally recognize the contestant that generates the largest amount of contributions for the scholarship fund during the half-time show of the Homecoming game, November 4, 2006. Contributions to this campaign will provide competitive scholarship opportunities for students pursuing academic studies at NCCU. For this purpose, I extend this invaluable opportunity to invest in our leaders of tomorrow, today.

I am the daughter of Dr. Marion Gooding of Pasaic, New Jersey and Alphonse Gooding of St. Thomas, US Virgin Islands. Originally from St. Thomas, US Virgin Islands, I moved to Durham, North Carolina in 1992 from Pennsylvania to attend North Carolina Central University. I received my Bachelor of Science degree in mathematics with a concentration in computer science in 1992. Furthering my education, I received a Master of Science in engineering with a major in computer science and a concentration in Artificial Intelligence in 1995. I am currently a computer scientist working for Computer Sciences Corporation in Research Triangle Park, North Carolina. I am also the owner and president of Triangle WebWorks, a web development and web hosting company in RTP, North Carolina.

I am also active in the community. One of my activities is serving as a mentor and mentor leader in the Women and Mathematics mentoring program. In 2004, I was recognized as the Business and Professional Women’s Organization’s outstanding Young Careerist local and district winner for the Triangle chapter. Through my continued support of my Alma Mata, I am active in the Durham Chapter. I have served as Recording Secretary in the past and am presently an active national committee member of the Eagle Outreach Committee. I am also the developer and webmaster for NCCU.Com, which is the website for NCCU's National Alumni Association.

I, along with several prospective students seeking a competitive, affordable education, invite you to extend your “giving” to the North Carolina Central University Alumni Association Scholarship Fund. With your financial support, the Alumni Association can continue the tradition of assisting deserving students who aspire to attend NCCU.

I welcome your generous contribution of $100.00 in support of my ongoing initiative to increase funding for alumni scholarships and student aid. Please know, however, that any amount offered will be greatly appreciated. Your tax-deductible contribution should be made payable to the NCCU Foundation and mailed to the address above by October 11, 2006. Please indicate on the check or money order memo line that your contribution supports the “Mrs. Alumni Contest – Durham Chapter.”

Thank you for your continued support of NCCU and especially to the scholarship effort. I look forward to hearing from you! You may contact me at: athornton@nc.rr.com

Sincerely,

Angela Gooding Thornton
